From the border of northern Thailand, a traveler has two options for getting to Luang Prabang in central Laos. Either the 2-day slowboat (which I opted for), or the 8-hour speedboat. I had no regrets about chosing the slower option, after seeing (and hearing) these aweful contraptions go racing down the river. My Lonely Planet describes the experience as something like spending a day on a runaway chainsaw. Sounds great.
